Supporting a Vision: Embracing the Power of Implementation
Nigeria at the moment is buzzing about Hilda Baci, a young Nigerian who has set the world record for the longest cooking time by an individual. This week's common theme is the power of motivation, tenacity, mindfulness and so on, but while we continue to praise Hilda Baci for this great achievement, my thoughts this week are with her implementing team.
I joined the live stream a few times, not only to marvel at Hilda for cooking for anything longer than 30 minutes but to listen to her team, who you could hear at different times either cheering her on or trying to put order to the chaos outside from fans and fellow cheerleaders, so she could focus. When she was about to beat the world record of 87 hours and 45 minutes, someone said, ‘When she beats it, please don’t shout or jump around; I am begging you; she needs to keep going’
Every successful organization or project has a visionary leader who sets the direction and inspires others with a compelling or sometimes audacious vision. This leader often takes the spotlight and receives recognition for their ability to see the bigger picture. However, behind every visionary leader, a team of dedicated individuals works tirelessly to bring that vision to life. These unsung heroes possess the unique skill set and mindset required to implement and execute the vision effectively.
Not everyone can be the ‘boss’; some of us are born to be implementers, taking the vision from zero to a thousand.
In a world that often glorifies the role of a leader, it is essential to recognize and value the crucial role of implementers. While a leader provides the vision and strategic direction, the implementers translate that vision into action. They are the ones who take the necessary steps to turn ideas into reality, navigate obstacles, and make things happen on the ground. Without their dedication and expertise, even the most brilliant vision would remain nothing more than a lofty dream.
Being an implementer requires a unique set of skills and attributes. These individuals possess a keen eye for detail, exceptional organizational abilities, and a natural inclination for problem-solving. They are the ones who can break down the grand vision into concrete tasks, set realistic goals, and create action plans. Implementers have the ability to think analytically, anticipate potential challenges, and devise strategies to overcome them. Their attention to detail ensures that every piece of the puzzle is carefully put together, leading to the successful realization of the vision.
You see, implementers play a vital role in providing stability and consistency. They often ensure that the vision remains on track and that the necessary resources are allocated appropriately. Their contribution is not only limited to execution but also includes monitoring progress, evaluating results, and making adjustments when needed. Implementers are masters of execution, turning abstract ideas into tangible outcomes.
The mistake most people make is thinking that an implementer lacks vision, strategy, ambition or the ability to lead. This is not the case; being an implementer means recognizing and embracing one’s strengths and finding fulfilment in bringing a vision to life through execution. Implementers are often highly self-motivated individuals who find satisfaction in making a difference and contributing to the success of a larger purpose. They understand that their role is crucial in achieving the shared goals and are willing to invest their time, energy, and expertise to make it happen.
At an event, I was asked what my purpose was, and I responded, ‘to be an implementer of visions’ because this is where I find joy, bringing visions to life. For people like me who find themselves drawn to the role of an implementer, it is important to embrace your purpose and value your contribution to the bigger picture. While not everyone can be the CEO or the visionary leader, implementing a vision requires a different skill and mindset that is just as valuable and must be protected at all costs. By acknowledging the significance of your role and cultivating your skills, you can become instrumental in driving meaningful change and achieving audacious goals.
I join the whole world to congratulate Hilda Baci, but I also congratulate her team because they believed in her crazy vision and stood by her from an idea to the very end.
